Nigerian Meat Pie / Chicken Pie

I took a poll on my Instagram page (@cakesbysabby) a few days ago, because I couldn’t decide between baking Meat Pies or Chicken Pies. They are really similar in preparation and baking, the only difference is the filling.

Chicken Pie won the vote! So, I decided to go with Chicken Pie. I know the images look like it is Meat Pie but it’s got a Chicken Pie filling.

See the recipe below and happy baking!

8. Spices (Salt, Curry, Garlic, Ginger, Maggi / Knorr)

9. 1/2 cup of Chicken Stock

10. 4-5 tablespoons of Cooking Oil / Butter

Ingredients: Meat Pie Recipe

1. 250 g of Ground Beef

2. 1 large Potato

3. 1 long Carrot

4. 1 medium-sized Onion

5. 2 tsp of Flour

6. 1/2 cup of water (for the flour mixture)

7. Spices (Salt, Curry, Garlic, Ginger, Maggi / Knorr)

8. 1/2 cup of Beef Stock

9. 4-5 tablespoons of Cooking Oil / Butter

**Feel free to add any other vegetable or spices of your choice.

Dough Preparation

1. Prepare your dough by rubbing the flour and butter together until it feels like breadcrumbs.

2. Add some water to the mixture slowly until the dough feels firm.

3. Roll out your dough with a rolling pin and cut it into circles.

BAKING TIP: You do not have to make your dough from scratch, there are ready made dough out there. I have used Presidents choice and Empanada dough (Goya brand) in the past.

Chicken Pie / Meat Pie

1. Prepare your chicken / ground beef, boil it with an onion and spice to your taste.

2. Boil the Potato and chop it into cubes.

3. Chop the boiled chicken into tiny pieces (for chicken pie).

4. Chop the carrot and any other vegetables.

5. In a pot, mix the chicken / ground beef, vegetables, a mixture of (flour and water), oil / butter, spice to your taste.

6. Place the filling in a cool place. Please do not fill your pastry when the filling is still hot.

7. Spoon the mixture into the cut out dough, gently wet the edges of the dough with water and close the pastry. Use a fork to make the popular Meat Pie and Chicken Pie pattern. Don’t forget to make those cute holes on top.

8. Repeat the same steps for the rest of your pastry.

9. Bake in a Pre-heated oven (medium heat) until golden brown, for about 20 – 30 mins.
